In Europe, transport accounts for approximately 25 to 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions. This makes it one of the highest-emitting sectors and, moreover, the sector in which emissions have fallen the least in relative terms since 1990. More than 70% of these emissions come from road transport, including passenger cars and lorries. It is in this part of the chain that the greatest impact can be made, but making it more sustainable takes time and depends on technological and infrastructural developments.

Market-based pricing needed for a resilient European transport sector

Zwolle, 11 March 2026 – The ongoing fuel crisis triggered by the war in Iran is exposing a structural weakness in the European transport sector: fixed transport price lists are no longer viable in a market defined by volatile fuel costs.

“Fixed price lists act as a straitjacket in a market that changes every day,” says Maarten Klanderman, CEO of TransConnect. “Transport companies cannot afford to wait months for contract adjustments. They need pricing that reflects actual costs in real time. The current fuel crisis shows that flexibility is no longer a luxury – it is a necessity.”

As diesel prices fluctuate daily, transport companies are often forced to absorb rising costs for months before contractual price adjustments take effect. The result is mounting liquidity pressure, unpredictable margins and growing instability across the sector.

According to TransConnect, digital transport platforms offer a structural solution by aligning prices with real-time market conditions, including fuel costs, demand and available capacity.

Fixed price lists under pressure

The geopolitical tensions in Iran have driven global oil prices sharply higher, creating immediate cost pressures for transport companies across Europe. However, traditional transport contracts often only allow price adjustments after several months.

Industry organisation ECG (Association of European Vehicle Logistics) has warned about the consequences.

“Fuel price increases have an immediate impact on operational costs. When contractual adjustments only take place months later, logistics companies have to absorb those costs in the meantime. That places significant pressure on liquidity and cash flow,” says Frank Schnelle, Executive Director of ECG.

Market-responsive pricing for a more resilient transport market

“A healthy transport network depends on transparency,” says Klanderman. “When prices are based on real-time demand, capacity and cost levels, a fair balance emerges. That creates stability for carriers and predictability for customers.”

From auction to delivery: how CarOnSale and TransConnect are digitising the remarketing process

The automotive industry is evolving rapidly. With the rise of electrification, international trade and digital platforms, efficiency has become increasingly important. During the second instalment of the Remarketing Webinar Trilogy organised by Fleet Europe, TransConnect and CarOnSale explained how they collaborated to build a fully digitised workflow for car transport and remarketing.

The result: 20% lower transport costs, delivery times cut by half and a 99% delivery success rate.

The challenge: manual processes slowing growth

Founded in 2018, CarOnSale quickly became one of Europe’s largest B2B platforms for trading used cars. With more than 40,000 active users, 2,500 affiliated car dealers and 1.2 million vehicles processed annually through the platform, scalability was essential.

However, the company soon encountered a crucial bottleneck: vehicle transport.

“In the beginning, transport was a manual and fragmented process,” said Claus-Conrad Roth, director of OEM and new segments at CarOnSale. “We were faced with high transport costs, long delivery times and a lack of transparency. Every transport order required emails, phone calls and manual coordination. Not only was this time-consuming, it was also prone to errors.”

The four biggest pain points:

High transport costs: limited volume bundling kept the cost per vehicle high.
Long delivery times: limited planning and capacity meant vehicles sometimes waited weeks to be collected.
Geographical dispersion: vehicles were spread across Europe, making efficient route planning difficult.
Manual coordination: each order required individual handling, limiting scalability.

“If everything on the platform is digital – from auction to payment – but transport is still arranged through Excel sheets and phone calls, a crucial link is missing,” Roth said.

The solution: a strategic partnership with TransConnect

Result: a fully automated process with a 99% delivery success rate and an average delivery time of 4.4 days.
