What to consider when importing a car from Austria

When transporting a car from Austria, it is important that all required documents and details are complete and correct. Please note: our customers are responsible for checking, collecting and providing the right documents. The points below help you work out in advance what you need to consider.

1) Deregister the vehicle in Austria
Make sure the seller has deregistered the vehicle with the Austrian registration authority (Zulassungsstelle) and has provided an Abmeldebescheinigung or Verwertungsnachweis.

Collect the complete Austrian registration certificate (Zulassungsbescheinigung), parts I and II. Also arrange a signed sales invoice stating the VAT status, for example 0% intra-community supply or VAT paid, and the Certificate of Conformity (CoC).

2) Insurance and liability

Check that the carrier provides full insurance cover during transport. Choose a transport company that can document the condition of the vehicle before pick-up, so any insurance claims can be handled more easily.

3) Preparing the vehicle
Prepare the car properly by cleaning it inside and out, documenting any existing damage carefully, removing personal belongings, making sure the fuel tank is less than half full, switching off alarms and checking tyre pressure and battery status.

4) Registration and taxes at destination
After arrival, register the vehicle with the registration authority of the destination country. Arrange any required technical inspection, pay any registration taxes or duties that apply and apply the correct VAT treatment. Provide the CoC, the original Austrian documents, the invoice, transport documents and proof of local insurance.
